On 03/26/21 at 13:37 Cayuga Heights Fire Department was requested Mutual Aid to respond to Asbury Road in the town of Lansing for a reported structure fire following an electrical surge. CHFD Engine 3 and Ladder 1 responded, along with Lansing Fire Department Rescue 1, Engine 1, Engine 5, Chief 7 and Bangs Ambulance 950.
Engine 3 arrived on scene made supply to a nearby hydrant, supplying LFD engine 1, who were conducting an exterior attack on a porch fire. CHFD engine 3 then conducted a secondary search of the interior, where a second fire was located in an electrical box. This was knocked down by a dry-chem extinguisher, and through the use of a thermal imaging camera, no extension was located. NYSEG arrived on scene, and secured power, with Lansing command clearing all CHFD units by 14:30.
This was CHFD’s 7th call of the day, due to trees being blown into roads by storm winds, and power outages caused by trees giving false activations on many fire alarms. We ask the residents of Cayuga Heights to be cautious when driving in high wind condition, and to dial 911 if they smell electricals burning, as an early response from the homeowner in this fire lead to only minor property damage occurring.
